The Project
The Road project follows a young American-Armenian, Roffi Petrossian, as he tours Armenia opening his eyes to his heritage in discovery for what it means to be Armenian for him. This 12-part TV documentary series aims to show the natural beauty of the Armenian countryside, as well as the humble and interesting people that have lived there for generations with hopes to encourage Armenian diaspora to come and eventually repatriate in Armenia. Throughout the documentary, the young man gets closely acquainted to the land of his birthright by experiencing its natural beauty, fascinating architecture, forgotten sanctuaries, and the humble, creative, and heartwarming people who live within its borders. The second season offers a magnified look into daily contemporary life in Armenia as Roffi decides to repatriate, applies for citizenship and begins to build his life in Armenia where he decides to settle down. He understood that the reality of village life, working in the fields, working with stone, seeing success and failure, meant that he had to find a way to make a living․ The Road has received enthusiasm not just from within Armenia but also worldwide within the Armenian diaspora communities. As the show’s interest is expanding, our goal is to widen its reach by translating the Armenian show into English, aiming for a wider audience. Making the show accessible through English translations will not only allow Armenian diaspora to connect with their homeland but also encourage travellers to include Armenia in their destination, explore the hidden corners of the land, and visit people they may never see otherwise, breaking down preconceived notions of what it means to be Armenian, and build a renewed sense of Armenian identity.
«Ճանապարհ» նախագիծը ցույց է տալիս, թե ինչպես է երիտասարդ ամերիկահայ Րոֆֆի Պետրոսյանը շրջում Հայաստանով՝ տեսնելով նրա հարաստությունները, բացահայտելով՝ ինչ է նշանակում իր համար լինել հայ։ Այս 12 մասից բաղկացած վավերագրական ֆիլմը միտված է ցույց տալու Հայաստանի բնության գեղեցկությունը, ինչպես նաև հասարակ և հետաքրքիր մարդկանց, ովքեր սերունդներ շարունակ ապրում են այստեղ, հույսով և սպասումով, որ Սփյուռքի հայությունը ի վերջո վերադառնալու և հայրենադարձվելու է։ Այս նախագծի միջոցով երիտասարդ տղամարդը ծանոթանում է իր հայրենի հողի հետ՝ տեսնելով դրա բնական գեղեցկությունը, գրավիչ ճարտարապետությունը, մոռացված սրբավայրերը և այստեղ ապրող համեստ, ստեղծագործող և սրտառուչ մարդկանց։ Երկրորդ եթերաշրջանը ծանոթացնում է հայաստանյան ամենօրյա կյանքը, այն բանից հետո, երբ Րոֆֆին որոշում է կայացնում հայրենադարձվել, նա դիմում է քաղաքացիություն ստանալու համար և սկսում է իր կյանքը կառուցել Հայաստանում։ Նա բացահայտում է գյուղական կյանքի, դաշտերում աշխատելու, քարի հետ աշխատանքի, հաջողության և ձախողման իրական նշանակությունը, ինչի միջոցով նա պետք է գտնի ապրուստի միջոց։ «Ճանապարհ»-ը մեծ ոգևորություն է առաջացրել ոչ միայն Հայաստանում, այլև աշխարհասփյուռ հայության շրջանակներում։ Քանի որ նախագծի հանդեպ հետաքրքրությունը մեծանում է, մեր նպատակն է այն ավելի լայնացնել՝ թարգմանելով հայերենից անգլերեն։ Նախագիծի անգլերեն թարգմանված տարբերակը հնարավորություն է տալու ոչ միայն հայկական սփյուռքին ավելի սերտ կապվելու հայրենիքի հետ, այլև ոգևորելու է զբոսաշրջիկներին գալ Հայաստան, բացահայտել դրա թաքնված անկյունները, հանդիպել մարդկանց, ում երբեք ուրիշ այլ տեղում չեն կարողանա հանդիպել, կոտրել հայ լինելու կարծրացած պատկերացումները և կառուցել հայկական ինքնության նոր իմաստ։
Roffi
My name is Roffi Petrosian.
I’ve been told my entire life that I’m Armenian, but until today, I still don’t know what that means.
I am now in Armenia and have decided to walk from its southernmost point to the northernmost. To see with my own eyes the different colors and hues, feel the different tastes and smells, get to know the people who live here. A film crew will be with me on the road, filming everything along my journey.
I’ve left everything behind, to explore what it really means to be Armenian.
When I decided to come to Armenia, my relatives told me, “Roffi jan, don’t go there. You’ll be robbed of everything and killed. And never marry an Armenian girl, because the only thing they want is a green card. They’ll come to America, bring their families, and then divorce you”. But I really like it here, and am thinking about staying.
I want to do what many like me would like, and return to the land of my people. The stories told to me of Armenia, were from people who had never been here, I needed to experience it, to understand if what they said were true. To discover what it means to me, to be an Armenian.
That’s why I left everything to explore my cultural heritage. The place where my ancestors came from.
Իմ անունը Րոֆֆի Պետրոսյան է: Ամբողջ կյանքում ինձ ասել են, որ ես հայ եմ, բայց մինչև հիմա ես չգիտեմ՝ դա ինչ է նշանակում: Հիմա ես Հայաստանում եմ և որոշել եմ ոտքով անցնեմ նրա ամենահարավային կետից մինչև ամենահյուսիսայինը, իմ աչքերով տեսնել նրա տարբեր գույները, զգալ նրա համն ու հոտը, ծանոթանալ այստեղ ապրող մարդկանց հետ, իմ հետ ճանապարհին կլինի նկարահանող խումբը և կնկարի ամեն ինչ, որ կպատահի ինձ հետ: Ես թողել եմ ամեն ինչ, որ գտնեմ իմ Հայաստանը: Հասկանամ, թե իրականում ինչ է նշանակում լինել հայ: Երբ որ ես որոշեցի գալ Հայաստան, իմ բարեկամները ասեցին. «Րաֆֆի ջան, չգնաս այնտեղ, քեզնից կգողանան ամեն ինչ, կսպանեն քեզ։ Եվ չամուսնանաս մի հայ աղջկա հետ, որովհետև իրանք միայն գրին քարդ են ուզում, կգան Ամերիկա, իրենց ընտանիքին կբերեն Ամերիկա, հետո կբաժանվեն քեզնից»։ Բայց ես իսկապես սիրեցի Հայաստանը և մտածում եմ մնալ այստեղ։ Ես ուզում եմ անել այն, ինչ կցանկանային անել ինձ նման շատերը․ վերադառնալ իմ հայրենի հողը։ Հայաստանի մասին ինձ միշտ պատմել են մարդիկ, ովքեր երբեք այստեղ չեն եղել, ես պետք է ինքս փորձեմ, հասկանամ այդ պատմությունները ճիշտ են, թե ոչ։ Բացահայտեմ, թե ինձ համար ի՞նչ է նշանակում լինել հայ։ Դրա համար ես թողել եմ ամեն ինչ, որ բացահայտեմ իմ մշակութային ժառանգությունը։ Այն վայրը, որտեղից եկել են իմ նախնիները։
